O'Cuiv calls on Cowen doubters to resign
Senior Fianna Fáil minister Eamon O'Cuiv has said that anyone in the Cabinet who does not believe or trust in Brian Cowen should resign.
The Minister for Social Protection's comments come amid further damaging newspaper reports today about Brian Cowen's alleged involvement with senior Anglo Irish Bank officials.
Former Anglo chief executive David Drumm told the Daily Mail that Brian Cowen promised to intervene to get the NTMA to invest substantial state cash in Anglo in 2008. The Taoiseach has denied this.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times reports that Anglo chairman Seán Fitzpatrick and chief executive David Drumm lobbied economist Alan Gray, who was at the time a board member of the Central Bank, to help save the bank on the night before the state guarantee.
Mr Gray, who says he told Fitzpatrick and Drumm that the Central Bank was the appropriate channel to make their representations, attended a dinner with the Taoiseach after Mr Cowen's golf game with Sean Fitzpatrick.
Yesterday Brian Cowen announced that he would meet with members of the party to allow them to have their say on the future of the party.
Minister O'Cuiv says he has full confidence in the Taoiseach and that: "If you're a member of Cabinet, you're selected by the Taoiseach and if you didn’t have confidence in that Taoiseach, my belief is that you should resign."
