Dáil debates FG motion on McCartney murder

The Dáil debated a Fine Gael motion expressing revulsion at the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney last night.

The Dáil debated a Fine Gael motion expressing revulsion at the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney last night.

Opening the debate, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny used the murder to launch an attack on Sinn Féin.

He said the IRA gang that carried out the killing and cleaned up forensic evidence afterwards was clearly linked to Sinn Féin.

"It has been put to me that youths who fall foul of this gang have appointments made for them at the local Sinn Féin advice centre before they are kneecapped," he claimed.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern said the McCartney case highlighted the hypocrisy of the republican movement.

"It claims to stand for justice, but the question is what form of justice?" he asked.
