Gunfire has been reported at the US base in Kandahar for the second successive night.

Gunfire has been reported at the US base in Kandahar for the second successive night.

A huge fire is currently burning on the western perimeter of the base, but no further details are available.

Yesterday night, gunmen moved to within 50 yards of the base and opened fire, injuring two US soldiers.

The Americans retaliated with machine guns and scrambled helicopter gunships to drive off the attackers.

The US base houses more than 4,000 US soldiers, as well as suspected Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners. A spokesman for the US army said last night’s attackers appeared to be well organised.
