Maughan's men must plan without Gardiner

Star half back Peadar Gardiner will be missing from the Mayo line-up when they take on Roscommon in Sunday's Connacht SFC semi-final at Hyde Park.

Gardiner, who sustained knee ligament damage while playing for Crossmolina against Breatty in the first round of the county championship last month, will not be considered by manager John Maughan.

"Peadar's injury is worse than we initially thought. It's taking longer to heal. We had hoped it might just be a week or two but knee injuries are especially hard to predict," said Maughan.

Maughan has a number of options in his half-back line with veteran James Nallen likely to be partnered by two of the following: Conor Mullins, who started five times in last year's run to the All-Ireland final; Conor Moran; Alan Roche and Pat Kelly.

Roscommon seem likely to be without mainstays Francie Grehan (hamstring) and Gary Cox (foot) for the semi-final. Neither player is currently taking a full part in training with Val Daly's squad.
