A huge search is under way in Baghdad today for a possible downed coalition pilot.

Iraqi police patrolled a river bank and fired semi-automatic weapons into the water.

US military officials said they had no information of a downed plane.

A spokesman at the British Ministry of Defence also said they had no report of any pilots down in any part of Iraq.

Police set fire to the brush alongside the river and fired shots near the base of the al-Tahrir bridge.

Police pushed people back and cordoned off the roads leading to the area.

Small boats patrolled the river, searching the murky brown waters.

The search began after witnesses said they had seen parachutes fall alongside the west bank of the river.

Crowds and television cameras gathered quickly, and hundreds attempted to join the search.
