The Blues left it late to get their season off to a winning start.

Having dominated for long stretches, Waterford finally got their noses in front on 82 minutes when Willie Bruton got in behind to shoot to the net despite Tony O’Dowd’s best efforts to keep the ball out.

Daryl Murphy added a second on 91 minutes after O’Dowd could only parry away Bruton’s shot.

Ex-Blues’ player Alan Reilly then got Drogheda’s consolation goal from a free kick three minutes into stoppage time.
