Bob Tisdall, who won an Olympic gold medal for Ireland in Los Angeles in 1932, has died.

Tindall won the first of two Irish golds that year in the 440-yard hurdles.

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O'Donoghue said: "It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of Bob Tisdall.

“Born in what is now Sri Lanka, Bob was thoroughly Irish by lineage.

“One of Ireland's most gifted and versatile sportspeople, his place in the proud tradition of Irish Olympians has long been assured."

"I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends on their great loss."
