The Minister for Education has confirmed she is considering changing the requirements for those wishing to study medicine.

Students currently require a perfect Leaving Certificate to secure entry to medicine.

Mary Hanafin wants a new system, whereby entry to undergraduate medical programmes would be based on a combination of Leaving Cert points and results gained in an admission test.

The Minister has said that progress has been made in discussions on the issue with the universities.

Minister Hanafin has said she cannot understand how a student would need a perfect Leaving Certificate to become a perfect doctor.

!I am hoping that students going into fifth year this year who wish to enter medicine would have a very good Leaving Cert combined with an aptitude test," she said.

"In that way we can have the brightest and the best and be assured that these people are suitable for medicine and so end up with very good doctors."
