Fenerbahce celebrate dramatic win
Fenerbahce goalkeeper Volkan Demirel was the hero as his team advanced via a penalty shoot-out into the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
On a night which saw Manchester United, Arsenal – at the expense of holders AC Milan – and Barcelona book their places in the last eight, after 90 minutes in Sevilla the hosts led 3-2 against the Turks and had therefore cancelled out the first-leg deficit to make it 5-5 on aggregate.
With no goals in extra time, it was left to visiting goalkeeper Volkan to make the decisive contribution – by saving from Julien Escude, Ivica Dragutinovic and Dani Alves.
Volkan had earlier ’gifted’ Sevilla a two-goal lead within nine minutes, as four goals were scored in a pulsating first half.
He failed to deal with long-range efforts by Dani Alves and Seydou Keita – and although Brazilian forward Deivid pulled a goal back for Fenerbahce after 20 minutes, Sevilla restored a two-goal advantage with a deflected Freddie Kanoute shot just before half-time.
Deivid then pounced for his second with 11 minutes left.
Arsenal knocked out Milan at the San Siro, with late goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Spain international Fabregas smashed in a brilliant 25-yard strike with just six minutes left – before Adebayor made sure of the win, 2-0 on aggregate, to send the Gunners through.
Arsenal were good value for their victory following a determined display, and Fabregas had hit the crossbar in the first half.
Cristiano Ronaldo again showed his liking for the big stage by scoring the winner at Old Trafford as United set another Champions League milestone.
The Portugal winger steered the club to a 10th straight home victory in the competition, equalling Juventus’ record set 11 years ago.
Ronaldo struck in the 41st minute to break Lyon’s resistance and secure a place in the quarter-finals – with a 1-0 win and 2-1 progression on aggregate.
Celtic are out after a narrow but comprehensive defeat by Barcelona in the second leg in the Nou Camp.
The Catalan club led 3-2 from the first match in Glasgow, and Xavi’s goal from a Sylvinho cross after three minutes effectively ended any hopes of a Celtic comeback.
Gordon Strachan’s side did well to contain Barca’s superstars for the rest of the game – but the home side cruised into the last eight 4-2 on aggregate.
