Oasis nominated for three NME awards despite break-up

Oasis showed they are gone but not forgotten after landing three nominations at the NME Awards, including best British band - despite splitting five months ago.

Arctic Monkeys, whose third album 'Humbug' topped the charts last year, have the highest hopes for next month's event after landing nods for six awards.

Kasabian are their biggest challengers with five nominations, while Muse clock up four.

Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys go head-to-head in five categories - Best British Band, Live band, Album, Video and the new 'Giving it Back' award which recognises acts who are generous to fans.

Making up the best British band category for the music paper's annual awards are Muse and Biffy Clyro.

Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys said: "It's a good thing knowing we're still up for these awards - Kasabian have said that there aren't any other proper rock bands apart from us and them. I don't necessarily agree completely but I know what they're saying. I think we're just co-existing nicely."

Oasis fell apart last year when guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher quit the band after years of bickering with his frontman brother Liam. But NME readers have shown they are still fond of the band by voting them on to the shortlists for best video, best live event and best British band.

Despite female acts making a huge breakthrough in the past year - with Florence And The Machine and Lady GaGa landing four Brit Award nominations each last week - the shortlists are overwhelmingly skewed towards male guitar acts.

However Florence did land three nominations for the Shockwaves NME Awards 2010, while GaGa and La Roux both landed a pair each.

The prized best album title will be fought between Arctic Monkeys' 'Humbug', Kasabian's 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum', Muse's 'The Resistance', the Cribs' 'Ignore The Ignorant' and The Horrors' 'Primary Colours'.

NME editor Krissi Murison said: "The NME Awards is the one ceremony where you see the bands who have really meant something and made a difference get justly rewarded.

"So alongside deserving big names like Muse and Arctic Monkeys, there's also younger, influential artists like The Horrors and The Big Pink and the great thing is, there's no predicting which way the fans will vote."

The best live event of the past year will be fought between Blur's reunion show at Hyde Park, Jay-Z at Alexandra Palace, Muse's homecoming show at Teignmouth in Devon, Oasis at Heaton Park, Manchester and The Dead Weather's Halloween show at Shoreditch Church in east London.

Winners will be announced at the Shockwaves NME Awards on February 24 at the O2 Academy Brixton, in south London.
