Post mortems are due to be carried out today on the bodies of two young people who lost their lives in a house fire in Co Kildare yesterday.

Twenty-three-year-old Darren Hanly and 21-year-old Amanda Murphy were killed when a fire engulfed their house at McMurrough Hill in the Curragh in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The couple's two young children, aged three and two months, were not in the house at the time.

Gardaí say the exact cause of the blaze is not yet known, but they are not treating it as suspicious.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen at around 3am, soon after the couple returned to the house from New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Their bodies were discovered in an upstairs bedroom.
