Lampard eyes new landmark

Frank Lampard can point to the numbers if Michael Ballack wants to know what it takes to become a Chelsea legend.

Frank Lampard can point to the numbers if Michael Ballack wants to know what it takes to become a Chelsea legend.

Ballack is “extremely optimistic” he will be a Chelsea player before the World Cup but the impending arrival of the Bayern Munich star has not stopped Lampard tearing through the record books.

The England midfielder scored his 50th league goal for the Blues against Everton on Monday and says he wants the century.

He will reach another milestone with his 250th game for the club in Saturday’s FA Cup semi final against Liverpool, at Old Trafford.

Lampard, 27, said: “It is great and a nice landmark, which I did not know I was near to be honest.

"Long may it continue and hopefully I will get to the 100 one day.

“In the modern day I suppose to get in that is not an easy thing, so in five seasons, 50 goals is pretty good.” He scored five, six, 10 and 13 league goals respectively in his first four seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The goal against Everton, Lampard’s 20th in all competitions this season, was his 16th in the league this season.

It broke the Premiership record for midfield goals in a season, held by Paul Scholes and Robert Pires, and now he wants more as Jose Mourinho’s team go for the league and FA Cup double.

Lampard, an £11m (€15.9m) buy from West Ham five years ago, said: “I always looked up to and admired players like Scholes and Pires a few years ago when I was not scoring as regularly.

“I would like to push the record on now a few, with three games to go.

“You get pleasure from being involved in important goals, and assists from corners are always nice.

“At this stage of the season, every goal is so important, you are just happy to be involved and to help the team score goals,” he told Chelsea TV.

Boss Mourinho insists he can squeeze Ballack, 29, into his midfield without losing the balance or diminishing Lampard’s attacking power.

Ballack also enjoys a reputation for driving forward and scoring goals and his arrival would turn the heat on Lampard and Michael Essien.

The German will leave Bayern Munich on a Bosman free at the end of the Bundesliga season and his destination now seems certain to be Stamford Bridge.

German public broadcaster ZDF claimed today that a four-year deal had been agreed in with Chelsea, thought to be worth £110,000 (€158,800) a week.

Ballack’s agent Michael Becker said: “Negotiations are proceeding and we’re extremely optimistic a deal will be done before the World Cup.

“But it’s important to point out that nothing has been signed yet.”

Chelsea’s quest for the Double continues in the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Saturday.

The teams have met nine times in the last two seasons and the Blues have only lost once.

But it was a crucial defeat in the second leg of last season’s Champions League semi-final at Anfield, when Luis Garcia scored a controversial winner, and it still rankles at Stamford Bridge.
