A US restaurant has cooked up the world’s largest meatball, weighing in at more than 15 and a half stone.

Matthew Mitnitsky, owner of Nonni’s Italian Eatery in Concord, New Hampshire, said the 222.5lb meatball was authenticated as the world’s largest by state weights and measures officials.

The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the monster meatball as a record breaker and presented Mr Mitnitsky with a plaque.

The old record of 198.6lbs was set just over a month ago after Los Angeles-based talk show host Jimmy Kimmel vowed to beat a record set in Mexico.

That record – 109lbs – was set in August.

Mr Mitnitsky said he got involved “to bring the meatball back to the East Coast because that’s where it originated”.
