The AA says Kildare was among the worst-affected counties, with fallen trees slowing traffic on many roads.

Flash floods have also been reported on a number of routes in Galway, Mayo, Wicklow and Cork city centre.

Winds of up to 75 miles per hour were recorded in some areas, with more than 40,000 homes experiencing power cuts.

The ESB said between 5,000 and 6,000 were still without electricity today, but it expected to have power restored to them by lunchtime.

Northern Ireland electricity says it could be Saturday before everyone is reconnected.

There were also reports of serious flooding in certain regions.
