Grim peace talks end unsuccessfully

The talks in England to try to rescue the peace process from further crisis have ended without any sign of a breakthrough.

The talks in England to try to rescue the peace process from further crisis have ended without any sign of a breakthrough.

The talks are expected to reconvene on Friday after the Orange Twelfth of July parades tomorrow, in a bid to reach a deal on decommissioning, policing and the other points of conflict between the parties.

Earlier, the Ulster Unionist Party left the talks after their leader, David Trimble, departed to attend another engagement.

Speaking after the talks, Seamus Mallon of the SDLP said there was "great disappointment and anger at the cavalier way" some people had treated the issues.

It is understood there was a row at the beginning of the talks on Monday between Mr Mallon and Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness.
