Allardyce hails Anelka effect

Nicolas Anelka’s arrival at Bolton has led to a positive mood in the dressing room, according to manager Sam Allardyce.

The £8m (€11.9m) striker goes into tomorrow’s match at Newcastle aiming to get off the mark in the Barclays Premiership.

Anelka found the target for France in midweek – and in the Carling Cup – and Allardyce believes it is just a matter of time before his record signing, who has a slight thigh problem, scores in the top flight.

He said: “Nicolas’ game has improved overall. While he is fitting in slowly and surely, he should not worry about scoring in the Premiership as long as Bolton are winning.

“He has influenced everyone here. Nobody thought we would get him but I am glad to say we finally clinched a deal.

“It was a great lift for all those connected with the club and something a bit special.

“Nicolas has to live up to the pressure because he is our biggest signing. But I am sure he will produce the goods for us.”

Bolton have chalked up four successive clean sheets in the league despite the absence through injury of Joey O’Brien and Quinton Fortune.

Nicky Hunt has been recalled at right-back, with Tal Ben Haim switching to the left from central defence.

Allardyce said: “The back four have been thrown together and done a great job.

“Tal would have cried not so long ago if you had asked him to play at left-back. He did not even fancy it at right-back but he has responded magnificently.

“Nicky is also doing well and showing some of his old form.”

Allardyce may be short on numbers but Greece winger Stelios Giannakopoulos is struggling to get in the team.

The Bolton boss said: “He was our star man in many ways last season with his performances and goals.

“But Stelios has not lifted himself to that level again and he is finding that hard to deal with.”

Allardyce added: “Newcastle have some top players and that will make life difficult for us.

“First of all, we have to quieten the crowd and, if we do, we might have a chance of getting something from the game.”
