A Continental Airlines Boeing 757 jet has been forced to return to Glasgow Airport after a warning light on the flight deck indicated smoke may have been in the cargo hold.

The plane, with 140 people on board, was 150 miles out over the Atlantic on its way to Newark, New Jersey, when it was forced to return. A full emergency was declared, but the aircraft landed safely at 1.45pm.

Strathclyde Fire Brigade said it was called to Glasgow Airport after receiving a report of a "small fire in the luggage hold". A spokesman said 20 firefighters were on standby.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said they too had been alerted to the incident and added that the plane is being examined.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Airports said: "Glasgow Airport was closed for half-an-hour to allow the plane to perform an emergency landing.

"Once it landed, the airport's fire service and local emergency services were deployed to the scene and inflatable chutes were used to get the passengers off."

She said that the 140 passengers and crew were all "safe and well" and in the terminal building.

The spokeswoman could not say precisely what happened
