McEntee: We should have won it

Crossmaglen Rangers manager Tony McEntee felt that his side should have retained the Andy Merrigan Cup as he reflected on a number of late misses in today's drawn AIB All-Ireland Club SFC final against Garrycastle.

Defending champions Crossmaglen played out a 0-15 to 1-12 draw with the Westmeath outfit yesterday, with McEntee frustrated that the five-times winners failed to close out the game.

"I think if we are looking at the game from the point of view of the end of the match, it's definitely a match we should have won," he said afterwards.

"We were level with five minutes to go and surely missed five chances at the end. All we needed was a simple bit of composure and we probably didn’t get it.

"I guess Oisin (McConville) or Jamie (Clarke) or even Tony Kernan there should have shown a wee bit of composure and put over a handy score. Or if it was possible get a handy free."

The last quarter belonged to Crossmaglen with veteran forward McConville hugely impressive. At one stage five points in succession tied the contest but despite a host of scoring opportunities in the dying minutes, Rangers failed to register a winning score.

McEntee added: "I think we owned the last 20 minutes of the match, and I suppose it’s frustrating that we only played in patches of the game and got a bad start.

"We fought hard out there and we kept at it. We were five points down for most of the match. Once they got five points up we found it hard to claw it back.

"But we did claw it back and we worked our way at it. The disappointing thing is we didn't manage to finish it off. I think we should have done."

McEntee is happy to get another crack at Garrycastle, especially with Crossmaglen captain Stephen Kernan back in the frame after suspension.

"Both teams have the same amount of players back the next day. We have Stephen Kernan back as our captain and we'll go at it again."

Stephen's brother Paul was one of Crossmaglen's main playmakers in attack and McEntee was impressed with the half-forward's display.

"He is always there for an outlet pass and he is active, he is very fit and very mobile. Tony is a good player.

"We would like more scores out of him, but it is hard to play a mobile forward and get scores at the top end."
