Katy Perry felt like she had woken up on Christmas Day when she discovered she had received nine MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

The ‘California Gurls’ singer is up for more prizes than any other artist and she still can’t quite believe how many accolades she is in the running for.

She wrote on her twitter page: “OMG! I just got word that I'm nominated for 9 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS!!! I'm kinda speechless/nervous/turned on!

“I can't sleep … I'm so excited … It feels like every birthday/christmas/first kiss I ever had. Thanks so much for believing in me. I owe u.”

Katy – who is married to Russell Brand – has urged her fans to go and vote for her to win and she is already thinking about what daring dresses she is going to wear to the ceremony, which takes place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on August 28.

She added in another tweet: “now … u have to VOTE! Go to www.mtv.com to vote for ur favorite videos ... (u can pick mine if u fancy) ... Off to dream up the outfit(s)! (sic)”

However, the 'Firework' hitmaker is surprised that some of her favourite songs and artists have not been nominated for awards.

She tweeted: “I do miss my RiRi, (s&m) Swifty, (back to dec) Kesha (blow) & Robyn (every vid!) Jessie J, (pricetag) in the/any categories. (sic)”

Among the awards Katy is nominated for are Best Pop Video for 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)', Best Female Video for 'Firework' and Best Cinematography for 'Teenage Dream'

British singer Adele is up for seven awards, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video for 'Rolling in the Deep', while Lady Gaga, Beyonce Knowles and Nicki Minaj are each up for three accolades.
