Mourinho's Chelsea future under threat - report

Chelsea remained tight-lipped today as speculation over the future of manager Jose Mourinho continued ahead of this week’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea remained tight-lipped today as speculation over the future of manager Jose Mourinho continued ahead of this week’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho is understood to have demanded talks with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon and chairman Bruce Buck over the club’s reluctance to appeal the two-match UEFA ban that forces the Portuguese coach to sit in the stands for both games.

According to one report today, quoting a source close to the Chelsea manager, Mourinho is furious with the club’s unwillingness to appeal the touchline ban and feels he has not been given the backing he deserves.

A last-minute move by Chelsea to appeal his ban would be unlikely to placate the fiery Mourinho, who apparently feels let down.

The club believe an appeal of the decision would almost certainly lead to a longer ban for their outspoken coach.

But, according to the London Evening Standard, one of the coach’s closest allies believes the gulf between the two parties could even lead to a parting of the ways just one year after Mourinho arrived.

“This is not about money or contracts but is a very real problem,” he says. “Until now there have been no discussions and Jose is very frustrated that they don’t talk to him. There have to be some discussions to resolve this situation. Jose’s not happy because he’s fighting, fighting, fighting but with nobody behind him.

“He thinks he is alone and is not getting the support he deserves. He loves Chelsea, the club and the players, but it’s not working at the moment.

“He can’t continue to fight alone. They have to understand his personality. If they do not like it then they can say ‘thank you very much’ and he will move on.”

The lack of desire to fight the UEFA ban is just the latest in a long line of controversies which Mourinho feels he has been left to fight on his own.

Mourinho is understood to be angry with Kenyon over the alleged ‘tapping-up’ scandal involving Arsenal’s Ashley Cole.

He was, it is alleged, left dismayed by the fact that the club prevented assistant Steve Clarke giving a press conference to reveal he had seen Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard talking to referee Anders Frisk in the Barcelona tunnel as well as the decision to send Buck to the UEFA hearing last week instead of the more high-profile Kenyon.

Then there is the ‘blood-spinning’ row with Mourinho believed to be unhappy at the club’s unwillingness to defend its position following incorrect suggestions that they are using illegal and unproven methods to help players overcome injuries faster.

Mourinho is no stranger to walking away from a club if he feels he has no backing above him. The 42-year-old resigned from Benfica after just nine games in charge in 2000 because of a perceived lack of boardroom support.

Chelsea, however, continue to remain silent over suggestions that Mourinho has demanded showdown talks or that they might discuss the prospect of an appeal. A final decision on that issue is expected before tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile Mourinho is concentrating on preparing his side for Wednesday’s first-leg tie with Bayern at Stamford Bridge and has received a double boost on that front.

The first came from Chelsea’s German defender Robert Huth, a transfer target for their opponents, who says that Mourinho’s absence from the dug-out will only serve to fire them up.

Huth said: “I think it’s going to give us a boost. Knowing he’s not going to be there means every player will want to do well for him and show our support.

We’ve just got to get on with it and show the manager how much we much care about him and how much we want to win things.

The other boost emerged from the Bayern camp itself. The Germans are already without striker Claudio Pizarro and now have a doubt over his partner Roy Makaay.

Pizarro damaged a groin in Bayern’s win on Saturday but Makaay, who also went off early in the game, was unable to train yesterday.

The Dutch international has a thigh problem and Bayern coach Felix Magath said: “I hope we can get it fixed up by Wednesday. A complete loss of our attack would be quite problematic.”

Makaay is joint-second top scorer in this season’s Champions League with seven goals.
