Two people have died in a car crash in Co. Kildare.

The collision happened at around 8 o'clock this evening in the Killina area of Robertstown in Naas.

The two male occupants, aged 21 and 28 years old, were fatally injured when the car they were travelling in left the road and struck a tree.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Naas General Hospital.

A post mortem is to be arranged.

Gardai are at the scene and diversions are in place.

It brings to five the total number of lives lost on Irish roads this weekend.

Motorists are being urged to drive with extreme care tonight as Met Eireann has issued a weather warning.

Gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour and up to 40 millimetres of rain is expected overnight.
