RTÉ Radio accounted for the second largest national cohort, with 32.4 per cent of people listening to the broadcaster's Radio 1, 2fm and Lyric FM, marking an overall 1.7 per cent increase for them compared to last year's figures.

Despite claiming half of the listenership, regional stations were down by 2 per cent on last year, with only 2fm also reporting a decrease of 0.6 per cent.

The results also revealed that Irish adults listen to the radio on average for 239 minutes, or just under four hours during the week.

Younger people were found to be the greatest supporters of non-national stations, with regional and local stations accounting for 72.8 per cent of 15 to 24-year-old's share of listening.

This figure decreases to 64.5 per cent in 15 to 34-year-olds, decreasing further to 50.2 per cent among people over 35.

Dublin, the Dublin commuter belt and the 'Multi-City' areas, composed on Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Clare and Galway, and parts of Kildare, Meath and Wicklow, were the only areas where national stations were favoured.

Both RTÉ and Newstalk's listenership was highest in Dublin, on 43.2 and 10 per cent respectively, while Today FM's highest percentage came from the North East and Midlands.

Three local stations accounted for over half of their area's listenership, lead by MWR in Mayo on 67 per cent, followed by Highland Radio in Donegal on 65 per cent and WLR FM in Waterford on 50 per cent.
