Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin has welcomed the announcement that the US Secretary of State plans to visit Ireland later this month.

Hillary Clinton is due to arrive on October 11 as part of a visit to London, Dublin and Belfast.

She is expected to meet the Taoiseach, the President and Mr Martin himself during her day in Dublin.

The minister says the visit shows her "deep personal commitment to Irish-US relations".

"I very much look forward to welcoming the Secretary of State to Ireland," said Martin.

"Hillary Clinton has been a great friend to Ireland over many years.

"I welcome the opportunity for an exchange of views with the Secretary of State on these issues and on the many significant challenges facing the international community."
