Leo Varadkar: Time has come to amend 'restrictive' eighth amendment on abortion
The Health Minister Leo Varadkar says that the time has come to amend abortion law in Ireland.
Mr Varadkar says that Ireland's abortion law is "too restrictive".
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has promised to hold a citizens' forum on the issue of abortion if he is re-elected.
Minister Varadkar says he would vote in favour of legalising abortion in the case of fatal foetal abnormality.
He said: "What is in our Constitution currently is too restrictive and it doesn't take into account situations such as fatal foetal abnormalities, and doesn't take account the health of the mother and the long-term impact on her health should a pregnancy continue.
"That's why I think the time has come to amend the eighth amendment.
