Strauss-Kahn maid sues for libel

The hotel maid at the centre of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn sex assault case is suing the New York Post after it called her a prostitute.

The 33-year-old woman’s lawyer, Kenneth Thompson, filed the libel claim in Bronx state Supreme Court.

A series of Post articles over the weekend said the woman was a “prostitute,” and “hooker” and that she “traded sex for money.”

The lawsuit says that the statements are false.

Strauss-Kahn was released without bail on Friday after prosecutors said new information about the woman’s life had forced them to reconsider the case. They say she lied about details surrounding how she came to the US.

The woman maintains the sexual assault occurred.

Meanwhile the French author who claims Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her during a book interview said she would lodge a criminal complaint in order to clear her own name of suspicion that she had fabricated the accusation.

Tristane Banon told French news magazine L’Express that she was tired of hearing “lies and rumours” told about the incident in 2003 with the former IMF chief.

“I can’t take it anymore hearing that I must be lying because I haven’t filed suit,” Banon said.
