At least seven people were killed when Typhoon Son Tinh blew the roofs off thousands of homes in northern Vietnam, taking the death toll over the past week to at least 31.

Vietnam’s disaster agency reported today that the storm also left five missing and injured 43.

The typhoon’s centre did not make landfall before dissipating at sea, but it blew the roofs off more than 13,000 houses and damaged nearly 47,000 acres of rice crops.

Son Tinh was a tropical storm when it swept through the central Philippines last week, killing 24 people and leaving six others missing. It gained typhoon strength with sustained wind speeds of up to 92mph as it crossed the South China Sea.
