MEPs slam airlines' one-bag rule

The one carry-on bag rule imposed by some airlines has been strongly condemned by MEPs in Strasbourg.

The MEPs argue the one-bag policy infringes passengers’ rights. They have questioned the right of airlines to restrict passengers' cabin baggage allowances.

Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins said it was bad practice to restrict passengers from carrying on additional duty free and retail items purchased at airports.

"It's wrong" he said. "It's a ridiculously punitive measure…In some cases, airlines are charging €50 if you go to check-in and they see you have another item other than the overhead bag…That's extortionate."
