Gaza battered as footage emerges of 'knock on the roof' airstrike

The UN says 17,000 people in Gaza have sought refuge in its shelters as violence continues for a seventh day.

Palestine is to ask the United Nations for international protection.

It comes as the Gaza-based Watania news agency posted video footage of an example of Israel’s controversial 'knock on the roof' airstrike.

In the video, a house is struck by a small missile as a warning that the house has been targeted for an airstrike.

The clip then shows the house being completely destroyed by two bombs.

The agency claims the bombings were carried out by two F16 fighter planes.

Reports from Gaza claim more than 180 people have died during the current offensive - none of them on the Israeli side.

Israel has rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying it will hit Hamas with growing force.

Hundreds of rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel but most have been intercepted.

Raji Sourani - Director of Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said that eight out of 10 killed in Gaza were civilians.

Mr Sourani says it is not true that Hamas has tied itself into the civilian infrastructure, instead accusing Israel of systematic war crimes.

He said: "Nobody cares about the siege imposed on Gaza for the last eight years...it is the biggest human-made disaster.

"The international community forgot (sic) there is occupation, forgot that we have this misery and catastrophe and this bombing of civilians...everytime Hamas bombs Israel people celebrate because they are forgotten - there is holy suffering here."
