US President Donald Trump is planning to address the nation on his strategy for the war in Afghanistan.

The White House said Mr Trump will speak to the country on Monday night from Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia.

Mr Trump and his national security team met on Friday at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland to reach agreement on a strategy.

Mr Trump tweeted over the weekend that he had made a decision.

Defence secretary Jim Mattis, travelling in Afghanistan on Sunday, also said Mr Trump had reached a decision. Mr Mattis declined to discuss specifics before Mr Trump's announcement.

It will be Mr Trump's first formal address to the nation as president, and it follows a period of isolation for Mr Trump following his comments about racial violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
