Unlucky break for Reyna

Manchester City midfielder Claudio Reyna has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a broken ankle.

Manchester City midfielder Claudio Reyna has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a broken ankle.

The 32-year-old has been playing with the injury for two months but recent scans have only just revealed the full extent of the problem.

Reyna missed last night’s defeat to Chelsea and will now head to Holland for surgery tomorrow, sidelining him for between six to eight weeks.

The USA captain will not be in Premiership action again until City tackle Liverpool at Anfield on February 28, although he could make the Blues line-up the previous week if they make the FA Cup fifth round.

“It has been really sore and it didn’t feel right,” Reyna told the club’s website, www.mcfc.co.uk.

“I could not train through the week and I was just trying to get through games.”

Reyna’s injury only increases the chances of Blues manager Stuart Pearce making a move to bring in midfield reinforcements during the January transfer window.

And it now seems almost certain Espanyol wide-man Albert Riera will be one of the first new recruits, with the player’s advisors at Eastlands last night, paving the way for what is expected to be a loan move until the end of the season.
