Player ratings: Coleman the best on poor night for Ireland v Georgia

Randolph, 5, Saved twice by the woodwork in the first half, as his goal led a charmed life. Nerves were on show with desperate dive to save a Mchedlidze header going clearly wide, writes Larry Ryan.

Coleman, 6, named skipper as he often leads by example, but was characteristically sloppy in the first half. Made up for it with a mazy run and, em, assist for his own goal.

Duffy, 5, the Brighton centre half straight back in after missing Serbia through suspension. Committed and strong as ever, one good block in first half.

Clark, 4, surprise inclusion to some, the Newcastle stopper was selected ahead of John O'Shea and Richard Keogh, decent, unfussy performance as Duffy dominated in the air.

Ward, 4, first half blighted by too many of those aimless, hopeful long punts. Lucky to see Levan Mchedlidze's header come off the bar after being beaten to the ball by Gorgian striker.

McCarthy, 4, Everton midfielder selected ahead of Glenn Whelan, despite not playing since August. Uninspiring showing, but not alone in that regard.

Hendrick, 5, part of midfield three, had nothing like the impact he'd have wanted as Georgia looked more composed in possession with hosts launching the ball. Booked for late tackle – misses Moldova game.

Brady; 5, one of the few players always brave and eager enough to get on the ball, but didn't do enough in open play or at set pieces. Big clash of heads on 76 saw him removed to a standing ovation.

McClean, 5, At the heart of everything decent in the opening exchanges, but fell off as Ireland struggled. Long range shot on hour stretched Georgian keeper, should have scored with injury time header.

Long, 4, Nothing of note in the first 45, as Ireland left him isolated up front chasing dead end balls. Ran – as ever – in second half, but must hate these games.

Walters, 4, Overhit overhead kick eight minutes before the break the only real chance Ireland had in the first half. Pushed further up after break and provided pass for McClean's crossbar strike.

Subs: Whelan (for Brady), O'Shea (for Long). Not on long enough to rate.
