Centre Tom Allen salvaged a draw for Galwegians with a brilliant injury time try as Dublin University ended their first-ever game in the AIB League's top flight with a 24-24 draw.

Allen, a graduate of NEC Harlequins academy, evaded four would-be tacklers in the closing stages at Crowley Park to touch down in the corner, but John Cleary's conversion sailed wide.

Cleary thumped them into an early lead from a 17-metre penalty, and added a second soon after.

But from Trinity's first attack they managed to cross the 'Wegians' whitewash. A smart lineout take from Marc Warburton set skipper Hugh Hogan up for the try.

Simon Mitchell converted and exchanged penalties with Cleary before 'Wegians flanker Scott Donald crossed late on for a 16-10 interval lead.

Trinity out-half Donal Crotty pegged the visitors back in front at 17-16, with Mitchell converting and 'Wegians centre John Culkin in the blood-bin.

The Connacht Senior League winners went back in front through Cleary's fourth penalty, and although leaking a maul over by Trinity prop Forest Gainer, Michael Roche's pass from a Donald breakaway set Allen up for the late leveller.

Scorers: Galwegians: Tries: Scott Donald, Tom Allen; Con: John Cleary; Pens: John Cleary 4

DU: Tries: Hugh Hogan, Donal Crotty, Forest Gainer; Cons: Simon Mitchell 3; Pen: Simon Mitchell
