Muller: We must match Munster up front

Ulster captain Johann Muller is anticipating a war of attrition between both sets of forwards when his team travel to Thomond Park for their Heineken Cup quarter-final on Sunday (1.45pm).

Munster and Leinster have been the dominant Irish forces in European rugby in recent seasons but impressive showings against the likes of Cleerment Auvergne and Leicester Tigers have confirmed Ulster’s status as contenders this season.

South African Muller believes Munster will look to control the set piece and it is up to Ulster to match them in the pack and silence the home crowd.

"We know their pack will want to dominate," said Muller.

"They are a great scrummaging side and they have a great line-out. We have got to match them or we will lose."

"Quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals are all about the small things.

"It is all about making sure you do the little things really well.

“Normally if you do that, the scoreboard and the result will look after itself.”

The Ulstermen enter Sunday’s encounter on the back of a convincing 45-7 victory over Aironi while Munster will be looking to atone for a disappointing 9-18 home defeat to bitter rivals Leinster.

Munster’s lineout fell apart in the first half and their scrum was in reverse until the introduction of Wian du Preez and Mike Sherry.

Muller wasn’t altogether satisfied with the Ulster lineout against the Italians but was encouraged by their scrummaging performance however he insists the challenge will be much greater when they run out in Thomond Park.

"We lost two line-outs, but our scrum was really good.

"Rory, Tom and John did a very good job up front and the back five put their hands up as well.

"But we know the animal we are playing next week is a totally different one.

“We need to do our homework this week and make sure we plan accordingly."

Munster continue to sweat on the fitness of some key individuals. Conor Murray, Paul O’Connell and Donnacha Ryan are expected to return to the squad for the weekend with Denis Hurley and David Wallace also hoping to recover in time.

Ulster will find out more about Stephen Ferris’ injury after a scan today. The flanker was taken off against Aironi having damaged his ankle.
