Ireland's Martyn Irvine has won a silver medal at the scratch race at the World Championships overnight.

Ireland's Martyn Irvine has won a silver medal at the scratch race at the World Championships overnight.

Defending champion Irvine finished behind Ivan Kovalev in the 60-lap 15 kilometre race.

Irvine fought valiantly in defence of his title, but ultimately came up short as the Russian triumphed.

Cheung King Lok of Hong Kong was third.

Ryan Mullen came 4th in the individual pursuit while Irvine came 12th in that race.
