Shefflin: Tenth All-Ireland feels the same as the others

By Michael Moynihan

With another All-Ireland medal in his pocket, Henry Shefflin looked fairly relaxed after the game tonight. Why not? It was his tenth title, after all.

“I'd love to say it felt different but it didn't feel any different at all,” said the Ballyhale man.

“At that stage all you want is for Brian Gavin to blow the whistle so that you are All-Ireland champions.

“It's just self-satisfaction and relief that its finally over and you are champions. All the other stuff can follow on and people can talk about it, it looks good in headlines and stuff but to be part of that,

we always speak about it, it's that feeling.

“The subs and extended panel, when they come flying onto the field, lads like Geoff Brennan and Joe Brennan, brothers who are not able to tog out, unfortunately, they do as much as we do and every other county team has those players as well so it's about that moment, yes, it's worthwhile for us all.”

Is it worth it to Shefflin to come back next year and try for an eleventh title?

He laughed: “I don't know, I'll be enjoying the winter, that' s one sure thing. It's absolutely brilliant, we always enjoy winters when we have the All-Ireland cup at home.

“Last winter people would have been saying we were gone, we were finished, that was the way it was but I think there was great belief and great motivation within the panel.

“I'd say this time last year most of the lads were back training themselves, getting ready to go back training on the first of November, but I'd say every county does that and we're very lucky to be here as All-Ireland champions.”

He had a frustrating early summer with injuries, but the record-breaker said that felt like an age ago.

“Of course it was (frustrating), because we all want to train and play. These last few years if it wasn't for injury I wouldnt be playing the way its gone for me lately.”

His manager chimed in with his perspective on Shefflin's feat.

“Henry’s achievement is the one to talk about,” said Brian Cody.

“The manager is still as young as ever. The player himself gets older and it is a different thing. He is challenged in every single possible way from a physical point of view because he has gone through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune with injury.

“And to be here still at this level and be challenging for his place and then to have the absolutely deserved, I won’t say privileged, because he deserved what he achieved. To win his tenth All-Ireland on the field of play is just mind-boggling stuff.

“I thought for a while it might never be done again but there are a few lads coming behind him, who are keeping up as well. It is a magnificent time for Henry and some of the other players.”

Teammate Richie Power weighed in with his own tribute.

“Words can't describe that, to know that man off field is an honour and to play with him on it is an even greater honour,” said Power.

“I'd be lucky enough, I've hurled with two of my idols growing up, that was DJ (Carey) and Henry and to say I hurled with them is something I'll always remember - more so off the field because Henry

is just a pure gentleman and he would do anything for you.

"He helped me an awful lot over the last few years and he does it for the young lads. He showed it today when he came on, there was a whole calmness about him, he's a guy who's after playing in 13 or 14 All-Irelands and winning ten, his record itself is just unbelievable.

“The record wasn't mentioned once, not once, it's not about individual achievements in this panel, there's 36 of us there and we're all friends and would die for each other. Individual awards are

nice but our goal was to bring back Liam McCarthy.”
