Maher hit with eight-week ban06/12/2012 - 11:17:45
Loughrea full-forward Johnny Maher has been suspended for eight weeks following his involvement in some ill-tempered incidents during last month's replayed Galway SHC final against St. Thomas.
A fired-up Maher was seen to strike out at two St. Thomas players with his hurley after winning a 57th minute penalty during the 3-11 to 2-11 defeat.
He fired home the penalty for his second goal before tripping another player in the aftermath.
The incidents, which have been viewed over 150,000 times on YouTube, went unpunished by the match officials on the day.
However, the Galway Competitions Control Committee subsequently launched an investigation.
Their findings have led to the 29-year-old Maher being found guilty and duly suspended for two months.
The Hearings Committee also viewed video footage of an alleged stamp by St. Thomas' hat-trick hero Richie Murray, but there was no suspension issued.
That means Murray is free to play in February's AIB All-Ireland Club SHC semi-final against defending champions Loughgiel Shamrocks.
