A host of teammates and competitors have praised Armagh’s Aaron Kernan after the player announced his retirement from inter-county football.
Kernan made the surprise announcement yesterday in a statement released on the GPA website.
"I have informed the Armagh management and players today that I am retiring from county football. It is obviously a very difficult decision for me but I believe I’ve reached a stage where I need to focus energies on other aspects of my life.
"It was a great privilege for me to play for my county for 10 years and I cherish every step of the journey that began for me following our All-Ireland U21 success back in 2004.
"Having discussed the current situation with my family however, I believe the time is now right to make the transition although I will continue to play for my club Crossmaglen and remain actively involved in the GAA and the GPA.”
Kernan’s decision surprised many as, at 30 years of age, he was seen as having the potential to several more years at inter-county level.
The Orchard County player is regarded as one of the best defenders of recent years and many of the players who lined out against him have praised him since the retirement was announced.
Kernan was named ‘Young Footballer of the Year’ in 2005 and in his 10 year career with Armagh won the Ulster SFC four times , along with National League and All-Ireland U21 titles.
Armagh teammates have also praised the defender and expressed their sadness that he will no longer be part of the squad.
Best wishes to my teammate @AaronKernan on his retirement. Fantastic player for @Armagh_GAA and consistent performer at the highest level
