Aussies deliver stars of AFL in bid to breathe new life into international rules series

Following the abysmal showing of Australia’s international rules side last October and the subsequent promise that it wouldn’t happen again this year, it appears the Aussies have kept their word by naming an exceptionally strong squad.

The 24-man panel is brimming with talent as one might expect when the selection is taken entirely from previous recipients of All-Australian honours.

Nine of the AFL’s current All-Australians are included while the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe, Luke Hodge, Jobe Watson and Steve Johnson are other household names Down Under to be included.

The strength of the panel is in stark contrast to last year’s side which was picked on the sole basis of race as the so-called Indigenous All Stars were trounced 173-72 over the two legs held in Breffnie Park, Cavan and Croke Park in Dublin.

The match committee for the Australian team, comprising of coach Alastair Clarkson, assistants Ross Lyon, Chris Scott and Tadhg Kennelly, selector Gerard Healy and AFL football operations manager Mark Evans, convened last Thursday to select the team.

Lyon said the selectors had looked for running power and speed within the squad to match the strengths of the Ireland side.

"It is a unbelievably talented squad which has achieved a lot in AFL football," Lyon said.

"The selection criteria, the capacity that we looked for was great running power and an ability to adapt quickly to the round ball.

"There's numerous players who have played in the series before."

Of the big Aussie names not named in the squad, Gold Coast star Gary Ablett and Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury were unavailable because of shoulder operations, with Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin also absent and a captain for the side is yet to be named.

Meanwhile, an extended 40-man Irish squad will follow up their gathering in Mayo last week with a training session in Dublin during this week under the watchful eye of coach Paul Earley who once again takes the reigns.

Ireland, however, will have to plan without three of their star performers from last year, as Ciarán Byrne, Zach Tuohy and Ciarán Sheehan all have pre-season commitments with AFL side Carlton.

The one-off game is set to take place in Perth Patersons Stadium on 22 November.
