Wednesday’s TV tips

RWC Live: South Africa v USA (TV3, 4.30pm)

South Africa goes head to head with USA. Live in studio with Tommy Martin Matt Williams and Shane Byrne.

Commentary from Simon Ward and Joel Stransky.

Rachel’s Coastal Cooking (RTE One, 7.30pm)

This week Rachel is in beautiful West Cork where she visits an old friend, takes a tour of a copper mine and learns about the famous Hag of Beara as she cooks up some tasty treats.

The Great British Bake Off: The Final (BBC1, 8pm)

After weeks of risking soggy bottoms, limp crispbreads and undercooked sponge, only three bakers remain.

Yes, it’s time for the 2015 grand final, and you can bet that the trio who will battle it out for the engraved cake stand (can’t the show’s makers think of something more spectacular for the winner?) are more nervous than ever before.

Just three more challenges stand before them and the much-coveted title, and it’s too close a competition to call. The signature challenge involves turning enriched dough into filled ice buns.

That’s followed by the notoriously difficult technical, and then the final chance to impress - the showstopper, which this year will see them bake classic British cakes.

Garda Down Under (RTE One, 8.30pm)

In the final episode of Garda Down Under: Joe is reunited with his dog, Riggs.

Ciaran makes an alarming find during a drugs search and Michael and Sarah finally tie the knot.

Downton Abbey S6 (TV3, 9pm)

Ep3: Downton Abbey returns with the sixth and final series of the Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning drama which has become an international hit.

Series five wrapped up with Bates on the run after confessing the murder of Mr Green, leaving his Anna to walk free but live life without her husband.

Carson finally popped the question to Mrs Hughes even though she confessed she could never go into the B&B business after retirement.

And with plenty more storylines hanging in the balance, writer Julian Fellowes is set to wrap up the popular drama in a glorious fashion.

Ransom (3e, 9pm)

(1996) When a rich man's son is kidnapped, he cooperates with the police at first but then tries a unique tactic against the criminals.

Starring: Mel Gibson

Grand Designs (Ch4, 9pm)

Kevin McCloud leaves the mainland and journeys to Co Antrim in Northern Ireland, where teacher Michele Long and architect Michael Howe have bought a derelict, 100-year-old former blacksmiths’ premises.

They want to restore and transform it into their home, using a fittingly horseshoe-shaped modern straw bale extension.

Michael has virtually no practical experience, but hopes he can make up for that in enthusiasm.

He immediately launches into the project with a pickaxe, but it soon becomes clear that he and Michele may have been a little too ambitious (where have we heard that before?) when bad weather kicks in and the budget of £150k starts to look woefully short.

To make matters worse, a workshop fire puts them further behind, and it looks as if the couple may never get the job done.

Doctor Foster (BBC1, 9pm)

Gemma’s investigation into her husband, Simon, concludes as she prepares to take action against him.

After uncovering the secrets the man she married has been keeping from her, the senior GP must brace herself for the last time as she takes on a mission to reveal all of his betrayals.

She carefully devises a plan which will ensure her final act of revenge is as explosive as it can possibly be.

Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Thusitha Jayasundera star in the concluding episode of the gripping drama.

Planet Oil (BBC4, 9pm)

Iain Stewart examines how the fuel has come to dominate the modern world and looks at how mankind’s insatiable thirst for oil is changing the planet.

In the first episode he explores the story of 19th-century geologist George Bissell, who went searching for oily puddles in Pennsylvania that he had a hunch could be the source of a new kind of fuel.

Stewart then follows the story on through the development of products that could light homes, and in turn provide power for the newly emerging mass car market.

Second Captains Live (RTE Two, 9.55pm)

The third programme in the series will see the lads joined by special guests to look ahead to Ireland's Euro 2016 Qualifier clash against Germany and the Irish rugby team's final Pool game against France this weekend.

Ronan O'Gara and Shane Horgan are amongst tonight's guests.

Million Pound Properties (Ch4, 10pm)

This insightful new series follows Britain’s property millionaires as they buy and sell homes of wildly varying sizes across the UK.

The first edition features 22-year-old Lily Gray from Fulham, who is looking to take her first step onto the property ladder.

In central London, estate agent Tony Brown is trying to sell a tiny flat with a cupboard-sized kitchen for a whopping seven figures, and a couple search for a million-pound castle in Scotland, which they plan to refurbish to their own tastes.

Marley and Me (E4, 7.30pm)

(2008) Animal lovers will go bow wow wow for this engaging comedy-drama about one man’s journey of self-discovery with a mischievous Labrador, based on the book by John Grogan.

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston star as a young couple struggling to juggle professional and parental responsibilities as well as Marley, the tiny, adorable bundle of fun that soon grows into 100 pounds of uncontrollable energy, chewing up anything and everything in the couple’s home.

Only the stone coldest heart – or a cat lover – would fail to be moved by the outcome of this movie, but make sure you have a box of tissues handy.

The Switch (5*, 11.10pm)

(2010) Wally Mars (Jason Bateman) loves his best friend Kassie Larson (Jennifer Aniston) but cannot declare his true feelings for fear of losing her.

He is shocked when she announces her plan to have a child with the help of a donor.

The lucky father-to-be, Roland (Patrick Wilson), is a charming blonde Adonis and poor Wally drowns his sorrows, only to accidentally destroy the freshly produced pot of sperm.

He attempts to cover up his blunder by replenishing the sample and wakes the next morning with a crushing hangover and no recollection of his actions.

Seven years later, when Wally finally meets Kassie’s her son, Sebastian (Thomas Robinson), he notices familiar behavioural ticks and suddenly the memory of that fateful night comes flooding back.
