Wednesday’s TV tips

FILM: Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde (ITV2, 7.55pm)

(2003) Following her unconventional ascent through the ranks at Harvard Law School, sorority queen Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is now a well respected member of her law firm, poised to marry her adoring fiance Emmett (Luke Wilson).

In the process of putting together her wedding guest list, Elle discovers that the biological mother of her beloved pet pooch Bruiser is being used to test cosmetics.

Determined to protect the dog, Elle ventures to Washington DC and joins forces with a well respected congresswoman (Sally Field) to bring about radical reforms to the constitution.

Let’s make no bones about it – Legally Blonde 2 is a remix of the first film, but Witherspoon is as effervescent as ever and her natural sparkle carries the film along on a wave of feel-good fun.

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Sally Field, Bob Newhart, Bruce McGill, Regina King, Luke Wilson

TRAVEL: The Holiday Show Ireland (TV3, 8pm)

Get ready for sun, sea, sightseeing and adventure this January when TV3’s fun-filled and action-packed travel series, The Holiday Show returns to our screens with six half hour episodes.

Presented by Jon Slattery and Ciara Whelan, the series cover everything from romantic get-aways to winter fun!

5. County Kildare

This week, Ciara and Jon are exploring all the best of the Thoroughbred County.

Ciara bets her life savings on a horse at the Punchestown Races and Jon discovers that there's even something for the boys at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge Silverware.

DOCUMENTARY: Alaska – Earth’s Frozen Kingdom (BBC2, 8pm)

There are some TV channels only available via digital services that seem to be obsessed with Alaska.

They broadcast numerous reality shows set in the US state which concentrate on its plane companies, railroad, fishermen, survival expert and goodness only knows what else.

Now the BBC is getting in on the act with a three-part documentary narrated by Dougray Scott which charts a year in the life of Alaskans – both human and animal.

The species certainly face a battle to survive; huge swathes of it remain one of the wildest places on Earth, temperatures vary massively from summer to winter, and a third of it sits in the Arctic Circle. Nevertheless, plenty survives here – as the first episode, set in the spring, reveals.

Black bear cubs are seen emerging from their den, a mother sea otter cares for her young and sperm whales become the local fishermen’s worst nightmare.

DOCUMENTARY: GPs Behind Closed Doors (Channel 5, 8pm)

What happens inside a doctor’s consultation room is usually between the GP and their patient.

However, the first series of this docusoap allowed cameras in to reveal what happens – although we’re guessing that most of us were already aware of the routine having been in such a situation ourselves.

Now the staff at the Putneymead Group Medical Practice in south London are throwing open the doors of their surgery, and allowing viewers access to some of the 24,000 patients on its books.

Among them is Janet, who has a personality disorder and is planning to kill herself – and it’s up to Dr Ali Hassas to talk her down.

Meanwhile, Dr Tim King treats alcoholic assault victim Vittoria whose drunken behaviour causes chaos, but Dr Kieron Earney has a happier time during his regular meeting with Theresa and Richard, a married couple who both have special needs.

REALITY: Operation Transformation (RTE One, 8.30pm)

Over half way there, the end goal is in sight for our five leaders but that also means the 5K run is getting closer.

It’s time to up the ante! Fitness expert Karl Henry is expecting more than ever but will it pay off on the scales?

Our first three leaders find out at the weigh-in.

FILM: Robin Hood (Film4, 9pm)

(2010) After Richard the Lionheart is slain on the battlefield by the besieged French, archer Robin Longstride and his friends Little John, Will Scarlet and Allan A’Dayle head back to England.

To secure safe passage back home, Robin poses as slain knight Sir Robert Loxley and continues the ruse with the dead man’s wife, Marion, in order that she may cling on to the family estate once ruled by the now blind, decrepit Sir Walter Loxley.

Over time, Robin falls for Marion, but any chances of an enduring romance are threatened by political forces.

Director Ridley Scott and regular leading man Russell Crowe deliver a lively jaunt through Plantagenet history with some outstanding battle scenes. Crowe’s accent may be erratic, but that aside, this remains one of Scott’s best offerings for years.

Starring: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, William Hurt, Max von Sydow

COOKERY: The Restaurant (TV3, 9pm)

Maitre'D John Healy returns with Sean Moncrieff as the voice of the tenth series of The Restaurant, alongside resident critics Tom Doorley, Paolo Tullio, and a guest critic each week.

The hugely popular Irish reality television series will see six celebrities become head chefs over six weeks.

In the penultimate episode of the brand new series, Irish model, Roz Purcell, will be joined by special guest critic Simon Lamont.

They will be whisked off to the home of The Restaurant - the stunning Wineport Lodge in Glasson, Co Westmeath, where Roz will attempt to produce a top-class, three course menu with two value-for-money wines.

DOCUMENTARY: Abortion: Ireland’s Guilty Secret? (BBC3, 9pm)

Many people have criticised BBC Three’s output over the years, claiming its programming is dumbed down.

While some of its shows could be described as rather juvenile, it does, every now and then, come up with something intelligent and gripping – the kind of production we will miss once the station moves to an online service.

This documentary certainly falls into that category, and may even cause controversy in some quarters.

Reporter Alys Harte investigates the issue of abortion in Northern Ireland where it remains illegal – and divides opinion among of its young people.

Every year, Irish women travel to the mainland for safe and legal terminations, and here Alys meets 24-year-old Tara as she arrives in England for the procedure.

She also talks to Sarah, who changed her view on the situation when her first child was diagnosed with a fatal abnormality while still in the womb.

FILM: The Punisher (3e, 10pm)

(2004) This gritty tale of revenge and redemption stars Thomas Jane as Frank Castle, who as the unstoppable vigilante The Punisher introduces to the big screen one of Marvel's top-selling comic characters.

The former Delta Force Op and FBI special agent is set to leave his violent life behind when an operation goes wrong and the son of businessman and underworld bigwig Howard Saint (John Travolta) is killed.

The vengeful Saint engineers the murder of Castle's family, which leads Castle into a fierce ongoing battle with Saint's hired thugs.

But his life's work has begun: As The Punisher, he will provide justice for ordinary people and exact retribution from society's villains.

Starring: Laura Harring, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, John Travolta, Tom Jane, Will Patton, Eddie Jemison.
