Troubled rocker Pete Doherty will escape a fine, despite breaking anti-smoking laws by lighting a cigarette during a performance in Scotland.

The Babyshamles frontman broke laws banning smoking in public places at the Ironworks venue in Inverness.

But authorities have issued him a warning instead of a £50 (€74.31) fine - angering anti-smoking campaigners who insist he has been spared because he is a celebrity.

Politician Stewart Maxwell said: "If taxi drivers can be fined for smoking, then the idea that celebrities can get away with it is outrageous."
