The Government has made no decision on whether to allow the US right to use Irish airspace or airports in the event of war with Iraq.

Despite reports to the contrary today the Government here has made no decision on whether US troops will be allowed use Irish air-space or Irish airports for refuelling.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs says it simply too early to say.

The spokesperson did say that if there is a UN-mandated attack on Iraq and the Government receives a request from the US for the use of our airspace at that stage the Government would then consider its position.

The Government has said it supports the UN’s request for independent weapons inspectors however.
