A US police officer found his dead son's body at a road accident.

Off-duty policeman Jerry Myatt, 52, was on his way to a family reunion dinner when he pulled over to help at a car crash.

Amid the wreckage he discovered the body of his son, 23-year-old Jacob, who was also on his way home to the dinner.

Jacob's car had collided head-on with a city sewer truck, in Rochester, near Detroit, Michigan. The trucker was unhurt.

Fellow officers drove Mr Myatt home along with chaplin Greg Formanczyk, a retired police captain.

The family was already gathered at the Rochester home waiting for the father and son, said reports.

"The entire family were up from Tennessee visiting us," Mr Myatt said. "They'd just gotten here Monday. So they got to see him.

"Now they're staying for the funeral."
