A nine-year-old boy has been killed after he was chased and savaged by dingoes at a popular tourist spot in eastern Australia.
Police said the boy and a friend went for a walk near their camping site when the two wild dogs began following them.
The boys tried to outrun the animals but one boy tripped and was mauled, according to reports. The other boy escaped uninjured, they said.
The boys were camping on Fraser Island in Queensland state with their families.
Packs of dingoes roam many parts of Australia but it is very unusual for them to kill humans. Dingoes have been known to threaten visitors to Fraser Island, which is a popular camping and fishing spot.
Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie said park rangers were considering killing all dingoes on the island. He said about 40 dingoes had been destroyed on the island during the past 10 years.
