Burton congratulates constituency colleague Varadkar for coming out

Labour leader Joan Burton has congratulated Leo Varadkar on coming out as gay.

Joan Burton said the disclosure by the Minister for Health yesterday was a brave thing to do.

There has been widespread support for Minister Varadkar since he confirmed his sexuality, making him the first openly gay minister in Irish history.

Joan Burton, who shares the same Dublin West constituency, said she had set Minister Varadkar her best wishes.

"To come out and talk about it required a lot of courage," she said. "I sent him a text saying he did a brilliant interview and I wished him the best. I thought he emerged looking extremely happy after the interview and (I send my) congratulations to him."
