A crowd of around 1,000 people turned out at Clonard Monastery in Belfast last night for Sinn Féin's main public meeting on the policing issue.

The party leadership is holding a series of gatherings to try to convince republicans to back moves to endorse the PSNI at an ard fheis on Sunday.

Some voices at last night's meeting opposed the call to support the police force, but a majority appeared to be in favour of the leadership move.

Critics said they were concerned about republicans collaborating with human rights abusers, but Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said republicans had an opportunity to change the culture of collusion by making the police accountable.
