The victim, believed to be a man in his 40s, was shot dead in an alleyway at a loyalist housing estate in Newtownards, Co Down.

Police said the suspect was being interviewed about serious crime in the town.

The gun attack happened at Beaufort Walk in the West Winds area of Newtownards last night.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene by someone who reported hearing up to ten shots fired.

When paramedics arrived minutes later, the victim was already dead.

Police sealed off the area and began a detailed examination of the scene.

The victim has been identified by detectives but his name will not be released until close relatives have been informed.
