The union representing most of Ireland's primary school teachers has warned the Government that more funding must be provided for many school buildings.

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation has published a list of 40 schools which it claims are well below adequate safety standards, with some of them vermin-infested and overcrowded.

INTO President Donal O'Loinsigh said that 75% of the substandard schools on the list do not even have proper toilet facilities.

He referred to one particular gaelscoil in Kildare which has a single toilet for 48 children.
