As students receive their first round offers from the CAO today, the threat of the reintroduction of college fees hangs over them.

Labour TD, Eamon Gilmore, believes such a move would have a devastating affect on many families.

Mr Gilmore said: “The fees for a four or five year course are between €12,000 and €15,000. Certainly for a family with more than one child in third level education - that is a huge financial commitment.”

“It is something that would hit very hard on the PAYE worker on modest income who wants to send their children to third level education.”
