A UK regional airport today risked anger in two of its three neighbouring cities as it unveiled a new name.
East Midlands Airport managing director Graham Keddie confirmed that the destination will now be known as Nottingham East Midlands Airport.
The move follows a year long lobbying campaign by low-cost carrier bmibaby which claimed foreign travellers flying to the site had no idea where they were arriving.
Civic leaders in Leicestershire, where the airport is based, and in Derby, the nearest city to the site, had already anticipated the decision and aired fears that their tourism trade would be hit.
The airline sparked a debate about the name of the airport, in Castle Donington, Leicestershire, when it launched a €150,000-marketing drive last summer using the image of Nottingham’s most famous son, Robin Hood.
